Broadbent China wins large industrial development project in Ethiopia

Client: Welkait Sugar Mill project, Ethiopia

A total of 38 machines have been ordered as part of a two-stage project for the Welkait Sugar Mill. The project is one of ten sugar factories to be constructed under a five-year plan for growth and transformation in the Tigrai region, some 1200km north of the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa.

The first stage requires Broadbent to supply a total of 20 centrifuges, comprising six C52 batch basket machines for A massecuite and 14 SPV1425 continuous machines for processing B and C massecuites.

One year after the completion of Stage 1, the second stage will begin: Broadbent will supply a further six C52 batch basket machines and 14 SPV1425 continuous machines.

The Welkait Sugar Mill project is set to make a major difference to Tigrai, an area once struck by a famine so profound that it captured the attention of the BBC and inspired the support of Bob Geldof and Band Aid. With the continuing success of efforts to tame this desert, the Welkait Sugar Mill will process sugarcane from plantations spanning 45,000 hectares. When fully commissioned, the Mill will have the capacity to crush 24,000 tons of sugar cane each day. Broadbent is proud to play a part in this important project.
