  1. Abrasive Minerals Tailings Dewatering

A new greenfield mine in North America decided to dry stack tailings. Their tailings however posed several challenges:

    • Very high capacity,
    • A difficult to dewater particle size distribution consisting of a high proportion of fines and ultra-fines,
    • A coarse fraction of solids consisting of very abrasive grit.

Broadbent offered a solution utilising Broadbent proprietary tailings dewatering technology. Broadbent was chosen as a test partner because of the Broadbent reputation for very rugged centrifuges for abrasive applications. Testing proved the tailings could be dewatered to a stackable product with very clean effluent liquid in Broadbent’s proprietary tailings centrifuges.

After testing the end user requested bids from several companies offering tailings centrifuges. Broadbent was selected for providing the highest capacity with the fewest installed therefore reducing capital cost, and with the best evaluated wear protection and lowest long term operating cost. The net results are the plant will save millions of dollars in capital project costs and maintenance costs resulting in increased operating profits.

Capital money saved and increased profitability has made Broadbent the reliable partner for tailings dewatering.

  2. April 2020: Manufacturing Shops

Whilst maintaining social distancing and clean health practices, our manufacturing shops were still busy producing new and repairing old machines to keep their clients operating efficiently in April 2020.

8 centrifuges were supplied to and installed in China that April, due to the combined efforts of Broadbent China and Broadbent UK, despite the global situation with the COVID 19 pandemic at the time.

Broadbent have supplied a 6GTonne beam centrifuge to the new million dollar UNSW Geotechnical Centrifuge Research Facility. The centre has been nicknamed the Environmental Time Machine and is helping researchers and engineers to better understand and access the earth’s resources and is a joint effort between the School of Mining Engineering and the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering.

  6. Celebrating a major milestone: 160 Years of Manufacturing Centrifuges

Broadbent celebrated a major milestone in 2024 – 160 Years of manufacturing Industrial Centrifuges.

Thomas Broadbent & Son Ltd has stood the test of time – thanks to a worldwide reputation for engineering excellence that has stretched across the decades and enabled us to manufacture everything from steam vehicles, overhead cranes, winding gear and midget submarines, (as part of the Second World War war effort), to heavy-duty Industrial Centrifuges for the Textile, Chemical, Pharmaceutical, Mineral, Mining and Petrochemical processing industries.

Today, we still remain the front-runner in its field for centrifuge technology – in the supply of industrial processing equipment plus laundry equipment for hotels, hospitals and other organisations.

Simon Broadbent, our joint Managing Director, said the 160-year centrifuge manufacturing milestone was “a tremendous achievement”, adding: “The past successes are wonderful and the future is all to play for!”

Our company still operates from the site at Queen Street South, UK, where founder Thomas Broadbent started the business as a millwright in 1864.

We aim to continue providing state-of-art Industrial Centrifuge technology to such key industries around the world.

  7. Complete MEG Processing System

Broadbent have engineered, manufactured and supplied a complete MEG recovery package.

The system includes continuous decanter centrifuge technology complete with module frame, wash system, receiving vessels, master PLC controls and integrated pipework.

The unit was completely assembled and FAT tested prior to installation.

The unit is designed to separate salt contaminated ethylene glycol at a rate of 15-20 m3 per hour.

  8. Back in time, to 1978

Take a trip back in time to 1978. We found some old photos that show the four 900mm diameter Solid Bowl Decanter Centrifuges we supplied via Flottweg to the Basel Municipal Waste Plant in 1978.

Even now the machines look awesome in size.

Our Chairman at that time, Mr Peter Broadbent, stands alongside them.
