Why use centrifuge modelling?
The primary scientific reason for using centrifuge modelling to investigate large geotechnical phenomena is the dominance of material self-weight. The mechanical behaviour of soil is highly non-linear and stress-level dependent. To simulate accurately a prototype at small scale, the in situ stresses must be reproduced correctly in the model: if not, the model behaviour under load will fail to predict its behaviour in the real world.
In order to replicate these gravity induced stresses at real-world scale in a 1/Nth scale model, the test environment must allow for a gravitational field N times larger than that of the ‘real world’ structure. The Broadbent Genesis range of centrifuges is designed to provide such a test environment.
Physical modelling brings major geotechnical engineering benefits in:
• Parametric studies
• Verification of analytical or numerical methods
• Retaining structures
• Pile-soil interaction
• Tunnels
• Heat transfer
• Earthquakes
• Wave loading
• Contaminant transport
• Freeze/ thaw
• Deep mining effects

Regular inspection of centrifuge baskets is vital step in ensuring the safe, long-term operation of any centrifuge.
Inspection frequency varies between particular baskets and applications, but as a general rule baskets should be inspected every year and in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
It’s important that inspections are carried out by trained personnel using crack detection techniques such as dye penetrant, ultrasonic or magnetic particle inspection, depending on the basket itself.
If you need more help or advice on inspecting a centrifuge basket manufactured either by Broadbent or by other suppliers, please contact our Service Division on:

Vibration in a Batch Sugar Centrifuge can occur for a number of reasons. They include:
• Mechanical problems
• Wear
• Poor maintenance
• Incorrect operation (particularly during feeding)
• Inadequate support structure for the centrifuge
Many vibration and instability problems arise from a poor quality product feed or badly adjusted feed speed and feed rate.
All Broadbent Batch Sugar Centrifuges are fitted with two types of sensor that are connected to the control system to provide automatic protection against vibration or instability problems damaging the centrifuge or presenting a hazard to operators.
